Embroidered clothes flat lay: white T-shirt with a forget-me-not neckline, light blue shirt with a flower stem on the pocket and cream sweater with pink tulips, beside an embroidery hoop, floss and scissors

Embroidered Clothes: 20 Hand Embroidery Ideas for Shirts, Sweaters, Tees and Jeans

Embroidered clothes have a way of making a plain wardrobe feel personal. A ring of flowers around a T-shirt neckline, a stem growing out of a shirt pocket, a row of mushrooms above a sweatshirt hem: none of these take more than a few evenings, and each one turns something you already own into a piece nobody else has.

Below are 20 hand embroidery ideas for clothes, grouped by where they go on the garment: necklines and collars, the chest and pockets, sleeves and cuffs, and hems and seams. Every idea comes with a free printable pattern in actual size, a DMC thread key and the stitches you need.

What You Will Need

  • Embroidery floss (DMC six-strand cotton; the thread key for each pattern lists exact colors)
  • Light Effects metallic floss for the moon and stars idea
  • Embroidery needles, sizes 5 to 9 (a sturdier size 5 or 7 for denim)
  • A 5- or 6-inch embroidery hoop
  • Stabilizer: tear-away for knits and sweaters, cut-away for T-shirt jersey, water-soluble for tracing
  • A heat-erasable fabric pen and a white chalk pencil for dark fabrics
  • Small sharp embroidery scissors
  • A printer for the free PDF patterns

Before You Stitch on Clothes

Clothes are not flat squares of cotton, and a few habits make the difference between embroidery that lasts and embroidery that puckers after the first wash.

  • Wash and dry the garment first. New clothes can shrink, and if the fabric shrinks after you stitch, the design will pucker.
  • Stabilize stretchy fabrics. T-shirts, sweatshirts and knits need a stabilizer on the back, or the stitches will pull the fabric out of shape.
  • Stitch through one layer only. On sleeves, collars and pockets, slip a towel, a piece of cardboard or your hand inside so you do not sew the garment shut.
  • Print at 100%. Every PDF has a 1-inch square. Measure it after printing to make sure the pattern is actual size.
  • Do not pull too tight. Tight stitches gather the fabric. Let the thread lie flat on the surface.

Small blue forget-me-nots with yellow centers embroidered in a ring around the neckline of a white T-shirt

  • Threads: DMC 799, DMC 3325, DMC 726, DMC 368, DMC 3347

How to Wash Embroidered Clothes

Hand embroidery is sturdier than it looks, but a little care keeps colors bright and stitches smooth.

  • Turn the garment inside out before washing.
  • Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, or by hand for knits and pieces with metallic thread.
  • Skip the dryer when you can. Lay sweaters flat and hang shirts and jeans to dry.
  • Iron from the back on a folded towel so the stitches stay raised and do not get flattened.

FAQ

What is the best fabric for embroidered clothes?

Stable woven fabrics such as cotton shirting, linen, chambray and denim are the easiest. Knits like T-shirts, sweatshirts and sweaters work well too, as long as you put a stabilizer on the back.

How many strands of floss should I use on clothes?

Two strands are a good default for flowers and fine details. Use three strands for bolder lines and texture, six for wide satin bands on denim, and one strand for very fine details like strawberry seeds. Each pattern lists the strand count for every color.

Do I need a stabilizer?

For anything stretchy, yes. Use tear-away on sweaters and knits and cut-away on T-shirt jersey. For firm woven fabrics like denim or linen you can usually skip it.

How do I transfer a pattern onto dark fabric?

A heat-erasable pen does not show on dark colors. Use a white chalk pencil, or print the PDF on water-soluble stabilizer, stick it on the garment, stitch through it and rinse it away.

Will hand embroidery survive washing?

Yes, if you secure the thread ends on the back and wash the garment inside out in cold water. Avoid hot dryers, which can shrink the fabric around the stitches.
